Hunger is thus one of gravest human rights violations and the most widespread, yet
it is also one of the most overlooked, shadowed by more visible threats such as terrorism and torture.
In 2009,
the commitment to eradicate hunger is all but teetering on its edges. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United
Nations has recently released a report stating that, for the first time in human history, more than one billion people are
undernourished worldwide, with an estimate of 1020 million people going hungry every day. This is about 100 million more than
last year around one-sixth of the global population.
Unless substantial and sustained remedial actions are taken
immediately, the World Food Summit target of reducing the number of hungry people by half to no more than 420 million by 2015
will not be reached.
“A dangerous mix of the global economic slowdown combined with stubbornly high food
prices in many countries has pushed some 100 million more people than last year into chronic hunger and poverty. silent hunger
crisis— affecting one sixth of all of humanity — poses a serious risk for world peace and security. We urgently
need to forge a broad consensus on the total and rapid eradication of hunger in the world and to take the necessary actions.”
Months after the most recent conflict, Palestinian families are in despair and continue
to face food shortages and wide-spread poverty. The health situation has shown no improvement either as lack of supplies and
medicines continues to plague residents.
working with other local Relief organizations we can distribute food
packages, hygiene kits, kitchen sets and blankets to hundreds of families daily. Forty-eight tons of powdered milk were delivered
to school children and over 14,000 impoverished families benefit from the Family Sponsorship Program.
